The golden ratio, often represented by the Greek letter phi (Φ), is a mathematical concept and ratio that has been considered aesthetically pleasing and harmonious. It is an irrational number approximately equal to 1.6180339887.
Mathematically, the golden ratio is derived by dividing a line into two parts such that the ratio of the entire line to the longer segment is equal to the ratio of the longer segment to the shorter segment. This can be expressed as:
(a + b) / a = a / b = Φ
It’s been observed in various natural and man-made phenomena, including art, architecture, design, and even the proportions of the human body. It is believed to represent a sense of balance and beauty.
The golden ratio is also associated with the Fibonacci sequence, a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers (e.g., 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc.). The ratio between consecutive Fibonacci numbers tends to approach the golden ratio as the sequence progresses.
