Pythagoras disliked this view in the 6th century BC, mainly for aesthetic reasons; around 200 years later, Aristotle also provided scientific explanations for the spherical shape of the earth. Soon after, Eratosthenes even calculated its circumference – with astonishing accuracy. However, no one knew anything about the exact composition of the globe.
