The deposition of th e new atom is th e productoftheunion of th e positive and negative cu rre n ts. When the new atom is d ep osited , the oldoneistransmuted to energy. Professor Proc­ tor,in“Our Place Among In fin itie s,” says: As soon as we inquire into the adaptation of the su n ’s powers to the w ork w hich w ehave regarded as sp ecially assigned to him , we recognize am ystery ofm ysteries in the seem ing wasteofhisgiganticenergies. [Is th is “ seem ing waste, ” his “mysteryofmysteries,” scientific understanding, or is it ig no­ rance?] O ur earth receives less than the two thousand m illion th part of the heat and lig ht em itted by the sun; all the plan­ ets together receive less than the two hundred and th irty m illionth pa rt; therest is seem in gly scattered uselessly through interstellar depths. To oth er worlds, circlin g around other suns, our sun m ay indeed appear as a star ; but how minutethequantityoflight and heat so received from him , compared w ith the enorm ous qu an tity apparently wasted. The portion w hich seems sq uan ­ dered is scarcely affected at all by such sm all uses ; and that por­ tion is more than two hundred and th irty m illion s of tim es as great as the portion used to warm and to illu m in ate the solar system. A nd then consider w hat is the actual am ount of energy th us seem in gly wasted. I have com puted (adopting S ir J. H ersch el’s estim ate of the am ount of heat poured by the sun upon each square m ile of the earth ’s surface) th at the sun em its in each second as m uch lieat as w ould result from the burning of 11,600,000,000,000,000 tons of coal, and of this enorm ous am ount of energy the portion utilized (that is, the heat received by the various m embers of the solar system ) corresponds only to that due to the consum p­ tionofabout50millionsoftons—only50millionsoutof11,600 millionsofmillions.Theforcewastedis,infact,very nearly the w hole of the inconceivable am ount expended. Professor Newcombis equally uncertain. Heinforms usthat: A constant“dissipationofenergy” is go in g on in nature. Weallknow that the sun has been radiating heat into space during the w hole course of his existence. A sm all portion of this heat strikes the earth, and supports life and m otion on its sur­ face. Part III. tion of the su n ’s radiant heat received by the earth is, however, com paratively insignificant, since our lum in ary radiates in every direction equally, [It is evident from this that Professor I\ewcomb does not com prehend the law sof com bustion as they pertain to the influence of the sun ,] w hile the earth can re­ ceive on ly a part represented by the ratio w hich its apparent angular m agnitude as seen from the sun bears to the whole ce­ lestial sphere, w hich a sim ple calculation show s to be the ratio of1to2,170,000,000. d he stars radiate heat as w ell as the sun. Thus we have a continuous radiation from all the visib le bodies of the universe, whichmusthavebeengoing onfromthebeginning.This radiation cannot go on forever, unless the force expended in pro­ ducing the heat be returned to the sun in some form. There is no know n law of radiation, except that it proceeds out in straigh t lines from the radiating center. If the heat were returned back to the sun from space, it would have to return to the center from all d irectio n s; the earth w ould then intercept as m uch of the incom ing as of the ou tgoin ghea t; that is, we should receive as m uch heat from the sk y at n ig ht as from the sun by day. We know very w ell that this is not the case; indeed, there is no evidence of any heat at all reaching us from space excep tw hat is radiated from the stars. Since, then, the solar heat does not now return to the sun, we have to inquire w hat becomes of it, and whether a com pensation m ay not at som e tim e be effected w hereby all the lost heat w ill be received back again. Now, if we trace the radiated heat into the w ilds of space, we m ay m ake three possible hypotheses respecting its ultim ate d estiny : (1) Wem ay suppose it to be absolutely annihilated, ju st as it w as form erly supposed to be annihilated when it w as lost by friction. (2) It m ay continue its onward course through space forever. (3) It m ay, through som e agen cy of wh ich we have no conception, be u ltim ately gatnered and returned to the sources from w hich it em anated. The first of these hypotheses is one w hich the scientific thinkers of the present day w ould not regard as at all philosophical. The second altern ative— th at the heat radiated from the sun and stars continues its on ­ ward course through space forever — is the one m ost in accord w ith our scientific conceptions. We actually receive heat from the m ost distant star visib le in our telescopes, and th is heat has,, according to the best jud gm en t we can form, been traveling thousands of years w ithout any loss w hatever. If the hypothesis now under consideration be the correct one, then the heat radiated by the sun and stars is forever lost to them . There is no know nw ay by w hich the heat thus sen t off can be returned to the sun. It is all expended in producing vibrations in the ethereal m edium ,w hich con stan tly extend out farther and farther into space. The third hypothesis, lik e the first, is a sim ple conjecture perm itted by the necessary im p er­ fection of our know ledge. **Wemayregarditasgoodas an ob serv ed fact, that the sun has been radiating heat into void space for thousands or even m illion s of years w ithout an yd im i­ nution of the supply.
