Books and the Paper Trail

The claim has a literature: Teed, Morrow, Lang, Neupert, Diehl, Roxas, Abdelkader, Sexl, and the later internet archive.

Everything in the modern concave-earth source trail eventually comes back to The Cellular Cosmogony.

Published by the Koreshan movement, the book joins two very different voices. Part I is the universology of Koresh, Cyrus R. Teed, founder of the Koreshan religio-scientific system. Part II is The New Geodesy by U. G. Morrow, the surveyor and geodetic experimenter associated with the rectilineator work in Florida.[^1]

That pairing is the key. The book is theology and measurement at once: a religious cosmology seeking mechanical demonstration.

Koresh and the cellular universe

Teed's claim was cellular.

The Earth is a concave sphere. Humanity lives on the inner surface. The Sun, Moon, stars, planets, and the entire visible heavens are inside the world-shell. The outer surface is not the human world. The world is a cell, and life belongs inside it.[^2]

The OCR of the introduction preserves the basic declaration: in 1870, Koresh announced the cosmogonic form as cellular, with the surface of the Earth concave and curved at about eight inches to the mile.[^3]

That number matters because it links cosmology to measurement. Teed's universe is religious in motivation, but it wants geodesy. The doctrine needs the surface to curve upward. The rectilineator was built to make that claim mechanical.

Morrow and the rectilineator

U. G. Morrow's role was to turn the doctrine into an experiment.

The table of contents alone shows the scale of the effort. It lists water-surface experiments, observations on southern waters, the Gulf of Mexico, Naples Bay, Sanibel Light visible at long distance, Cape Romano, and the Koreshan Geodetic Expedition.[^4]

Then comes the machinery: accuracy of the rectilineator, system of reversals, final tests, uniform tide measures, levels, plumbs, appurtenances, records, and geodetic staff personnel.[^5]

This is why the book became foundational. It said the Earth is concave and then built a public measurement story around the claim.

The rectilineator was designed to establish a straight line independent of the water surface and then compare that line against the surface below. If the water rose toward the line, the surface was interpreted as concave. If it fell away, convex. The later Tamarack and Ebding stories depend on the same hunger for direct mechanical proof.

Optics and appearances

The book also knows that measurement alone is not enough.

The table of contents includes sections on optical factors, illusions, the vanishing ship's hull, horizons, lunar phases, eclipses, parallaxes, and the relations of Earth, Sun, Moon, and stars.[^6]

That is the same pattern we see later in Lang, Neupert, Sexl, Abdelkader, and Cezar. Once the Earth is made concave, every ordinary visual argument has to be rebuilt. The ship at the horizon, the roundness of celestial bodies, the behavior of sunlight, the apparent externality of the stars, and the meaning of photographs all become optical problems.

The Koreshans were early to that recognition. Their system is strange, but it is not one-dimensional. It tries to combine a measured surface, an enclosed heaven, and an explanation of why the world appears otherwise.

The public challenge

The book also preserves the public atmosphere around the claim.

The contents refer to reports in American newspapers, including a Chicago Times-Herald piece framed around the claim that we live inside the globe.[^7] It also mentions scientists being challenged to open contest and the possibility that a great revolution would result.[^8]

That language is pure Koreshan theater, but it is historically important. The movement wanted a public hearing. It wanted the experiment seen, reported, contested, and repeated.

This is the recurring drama of concave-earth literature: the authors believe they have a simple decisive observation, while official science either ignores it, dismisses it, or explains it away. The story becomes not only scientific, but social. Who is allowed to define a measurement? Who is allowed to call an experiment settled?

Why The Cellular Cosmogony matters

The book matters because it is the root document for the American line.

Later writers borrow its questions even when they leave its theology behind. The rectilineator becomes a legend. The concave water-surface argument returns in new forms. The idea of living on the inside of the world-shell becomes the shared premise for German hollow-world theory, geocosmic mapping, Biblical reconstruction, and modern diagrammatic hypotheses.

The book also explains why this subject refuses to stay in one category. It is religion, geodesy, optics, cosmology, public spectacle, and institutional grievance all at once. Annoying, yes. But also historically rich. The filing cabinet is on fire and somehow alphabetized.

For readers trying to understand the whole tradition, The Cellular Cosmogony is unavoidable. Teed gives the vision. Morrow gives the instrument. Together they create the American inner-world experiment: a cosmos shaped like a cell, defended by a straight line laid across the Florida shore.
